CARP member question:

Dear Sergeant Bob,

It seems like every other day I'm getting an email advising me about this scam and that scam, and I don't know how to tell which ones are legitimate. Do you have any advice?

Janet

Sergeant Bob answers:

Thanks for the question Janet!

Social media is overloaded with well-intended reports and rumours about what the most recent scam looks like. Sharing these matters with loved ones, friend and colleagues is important, but let’s stick to the facts. My concern is that the actual safety message is now being diluted by sensationalized stories and exaggerated scam stories are now confusing the legitimate security message.

The best way to separate the real threat from rumour is to go straight to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website. This fantastic, no cost, not-for-profit site is packed with information that will help you separate fact from fiction, allowing you to share the real story.

Information available on the site includes current scams, information on types of scams, how to report a scam attempt, FAQ section. And most interesting to me is the Fraud Warning section. This fascinating section allows you to see what’s happening across Canada right now. Police and public are constantly submitting information that gives the reader a snap shot of current trends. Scam details that are 12 hours old (rather than 12 months old) will provide the reader with great defensive tools for yourself and your friends.

So if you’re anxious to share a scam story with your relatives and friends click on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre site first: www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca

All the best,
Sergeant Bob
